Als rundt
Details Day 1: 31 km. - Sønderborg to Lavensby beach camping
Day 2: 24 km. - Lavensby beach camping to Mommark Camping
Day 3: 31 km. - Mommark camping to Sønderborg Total: 85 km
On our trip around Als we were very lucky with the weather. All three days were sunny, and most of the time we had almost completely flat water – ideal conditions for a calm and enjoyable tour.
We started at the Kayak Club in Sønderborg, who had kindly allowed us to park our car and trailer on their property. From here we paddled north and had a lunch break at Hardeshøj, where there is a nice beach to go ashore. The crossing over Als Fjord (1.7 km.) is well-traveled, and it required a sharp eye and good discipline in the group, as there were many sailboats in both directions. We stayed close together during the crossing. After lunch we continued towards today's camp, where we were rewarded with a beautiful sunset after dinner.
Since there aren’t really any primitive campsites along the coast of Als, we chose to take the trip with a little extra comfort and spent both nights at campsites – Lavensby Strandcamping and Mommark Camping. Both places offer cabins, but we brought tents. The kitchens were well-equipped with cooking utensils, but there are no shopping options at the sites, so it requires a bit of planning. We therefore brought dinner for the first day from home.
On day two, we followed the east coast of Als, where we were accompanied by several porpoises along the way. The coast mainly offers beautiful sandy beaches, and there is ample opportunity to go ashore along the way. We had our lunch break in Fynshav, where we also took the opportunity to take a walk through the town and stock up on provisions for dinner. When we arrived in Mommark late in the afternoon, it was time for a well-deserved dip at the delicious sandy beach before dinner was prepared.
Day three once again offered good weather as we paddled south of Als. We were lucky with the conditions and were able to take the route west of Kegnæs. The crossing over Hørup Hav back towards Als (2.3 km.) again required extra attention due to traffic. On days with stronger winds from the south or west, it is advantageous to make a short crossing over the dam at the southern end of Als and instead take the route up through Hørup Hav, here you will also be able to achieve a shorter crossing (900 m.). The last km. of the trip goes through the city of Sønderborg.
The trip around Als is a varied and beautiful kayaking experience that combines open water, fjords, sandy beaches and pleasant breaks on land.
