Circumnavigating Silkeborg
Every year, our kayak club does this round trip of Silkeborg. It’s a route I keep coming back to because of how varied and scenic it feels throughout the day.
The trip combines open lakes, narrow waterways, quiet forest sections, and paddling through the city itself — all in one route. The scenery changes constantly, which makes the paddle feel both adventurous and relaxed at the same time.
You start in the western end of Almindsø. At the eastern end of the lake, you can either do a short portage or continue through the small “otter passage” with the kayaks. The entrance can be difficult to spot, as it is hidden behind reeds, so it’s worth checking the map beforehand.
After lunch you continue the way back towards Silkeborg, with a detour into “Brillerne” (the glasses"), this is the most peacefull area i have ever paddled. Coming our of the narrow waterway you continue towards Silkeborg.
As you want to pass through Silkeborg, you can either pay to go through the lock system or make a short portage across the road. When we choose the portage, we usually turn it into a small cake or ice cream break before continuing.
The rest of the paddle is a lot of time next to buildings, but still a beatifull paddle
The route works well both as a relaxed day trip and as a social paddle with a group, with plenty of opportunities to take breaks and simply enjoy the Silkeborg area from the water.
