Skanderborg Sø
There’s something truly special about paddling on Skanderborg Lake.
The route combines peaceful nature with small touches of city life and offers cozy places to stop along the way – and it can easily be adapted whether you’re in the mood for a short afternoon paddle or a full-day trip.
Details
Distance: 23,3 km
Time: 4 hours paddling in relaxed speed + breaks
Breakspots: Hylken strand & Skanderborg kayakklub - markered with blue cirkels
When I paddle here with my club, we usually start at Restaurant Vestermølle (green mark on the map). There’s good parking, and a small jetty makes it easy to get in the kayak. From here, we follow the lake clockwise.
After about an hour and a half on the water, we reach Hylke Beach, where we stop for lunch. There are picnic tables and a jetty. On warm days you might be tempted by a quick dip – though our trips normally take place in the shoulder seasons, when we enjoy the quieter and slightly cooler atmosphere by the lake.
The trip continues west until we reach a narrow opening that leads us under the railway bridge. Here we make a small detour around Sct. Helene before heading back toward the town. On the way in to Skanderborg, we stop to enjoy our homemade coffee and cake next to the kayak club – a cozy little break where there’s often a chance to chat with locals.
As we get closer to Skanderborg, we sometimes take a small loop around Lillesø, located right in the middle of town. It’s a fun contrast to paddle into this small lake, surrounded by houses close to the water.
There are plenty of options to make the daytrip both shorter and longer.
Longer option:
Paddle all the way around the lake after the railway bridge and/or continue deeper into town.
Shorter option:
Skip the extra lakes or cross the main lake at one of the narrower stretches.
Whether you’re a beginner or an experienced paddler, this is a truly enjoyable trip.
