Tjele Langsø and Skals Å

Between Hobro and Viborg

This trip between Hobro and Viborg, from Tjele Langsø and down through Skals Å, is one of the more quiet and idyllic experiences I have had in a kayak.

It's not a fast ride – in fact, it's probably one of the slowest 35 km you can paddle. But that's exactly what makes it special.

Trip details

Distance: 35,7 km.

Paddle time: 5 hours og 40 minuts

Start: South of Vammen Camping (56.519, 9.594)

Break: Onsild shelter, after 18 km.

Finish: South east of Hersom (56.550, 9.567)

We start south of Vammen Camping, where it’s easy to get the kayaks on the water. The first stretch takes place on Tjele Langsø (a lake), but quickly (after 6.2km) you slide into Skals Å (a stream), the entrance can be difficult to see due to the reeds, follow along on a map if necessary. On the stream the landscape and rhythm change - it winds in countless bends, and the pace drops quite naturally. You are forced to be present - here it’s not about kilometers per hour, but about enjoying the peacefull surroundings.

Along the river there is limited access to breaks, as the banks are often steep and impassable. It is, however, possible to take small pee breaks along the way if you help each other up - but you have to be a little creative. The only real break stop is about halfway at Onsild shelter, where we have lunch. It is a simple place, but perfect for stretching your legs and getting some food.

After the break, continue along the winding stream all the way down to the end point southeast of Hersom. It is a day trip that requires a little planning, as it is advantageous to arrange to park cars at each end. However, there is only about 4 km - 5 minutes each way by car - between the start and the finish point.

This is a trip that I would especially recommend to paddlers who like long, quiet days on the water and who do not need many facilities along the way. Here, nature and tranquility are the focus.

It is important to note that rowing on Skals Å is only allowed for a very limited period from 15.6. to 1.10.
